2022 Year-in-Review: WEEMA's Holistic and Sustainable Development in Kembata Tembaro zone, Ethiopia

From December 2022

Here are some images highlighting the impact on the communities we serve. We asked our team in Ethiopia for their thoughts- here are their top ten:

In partnership with Lesley University and Roots Ethiopia, we remodeled & furnished ten child-friendly reading rooms (in 10 schools), stocking them with mother-tongue books for early readers. These rooms will serve over 12,000 students, helping to build a strong foundation for young students.

40 potter families were trained in modern pottery techniques and are successfully selling their beautiful and useful products to the community and restaurants.

Over 4,000 women are members of their local women’s self-help group. Collectively, they are saving money, building skills, and starting small businesses. Power in numbers!

Over 450 children with disabilities are now enrolled in their local schools, most of them for the first time in their lives. All children deserve a quality education!

58 farmers and their families learned modern farming & irrigation techniques and received quality seeds and seedlings, breaking the cycle of food insecurity.

Co-op Beekeepers have drastically increased honey production and sales through modern beekeeping! Sweet rewards for these skilled beekeepers!

1,100 girls received menstrual pads and support, keeping them in school every month. Girls no longer need to miss school because of their period.

1,136 children and 2,809 mothers received medical assessment & care from improved electronic medical assessment tools and trained health workers.

We continue to have meaningful conversations with community members, addressing critical issues impacting marginalized community members, including women & children, disabled children & adults, and the potter community.

We at WEEMA continue to grow and develop partnerships with leading experts to continue to develop and strengthen the impact of all our 18 projects.
