WEEMA’s work in Ethiopia contributes to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that seek to end poverty and foster inclusion by 2030. As the second most populous country in Africa with 109 million people, and one of the poorest, with an average annual income of $790, Ethiopia is an important target of holistic development programs. WEEMA partners with the Ethiopian government and other local actors to advance the SDGs and continue Ethiopia’s upward development trajectory. [Source]
Our poverty reduction approach is holistic with a dual focus on strengthening basic services like clean water and supporting income-generating activities.
By outfitting health centers with life-saving medical equipment and training health professionals, we are laying the groundwork for healthier populations.
One of our main areas of work is K-12 quality education, with special attention paid to helping disabled students access schooling and keeping girls in school.
Women’s empowerment is central to all of our work, with our programs addressing key barriers that women and girls face in education, healthcare and work.
We see clean water as a core necessity and human right -- and work to expand access in all communities where we work.
Tapping the local dynamism in the communities we operate in, our focus is to unlock local entrepreneurship through training and support.
Across our work, we seek to improve access to opportunities and representation for people with disabilities and to reduce the stigma that holds people back.
Our approach is predicated on community-led development, with local populations playing an active role in all decision-making.
