Beekeeper Cooperatives are Seeing an Increase in Honey Production

from November 16, 2022

Tesfanesh Tilahun and her husband had no beekeeping experience prior to joining their local cooperative in Magunga two years ago.

She recently reported that her family bought a milk cow with the honey they sold over the past two years! Her family currently has four hives, and her husband plans to build a modern hive for their home.

The beekeeping cooperative in the village of Magunga has seen an increase in honey production over the past two years.

Ongoing training, education, and transitioning hives to modern beehives have improved both the quantity and quality of honey. The beekeepers market their honey in the community with great success--and is now highly sought after for its taste and quality. We’ve even heard that people go to beekeepers' homes seeking out this amazing honey!

Esayas Esatu, a beekeeper at the coop, stated that after the beekeeping training, he realized that “One bee is more valuable than one ox.”
