MATERNAL, NEWBORN and CHILD HEALTH
WEEMA has two main goals within maternal, newborn and child health. First, our goal is to reduce preventable deaths - access to trained health professionals and supplies saves lives! Second, we want to pilot maternal child health models and interventions that can be taken to scale in Ethiopia.
WEEMA sponsored 5 women at the Hamilin College of Midwives. They graduated and returned to Kembata Tembaro Zone to serve as "expert Hamlin midwives” providing high quality-maternity care, mentorship to nurses and midwives, and community education on mother and child health.
Many health centers are without electricity, and healthcare providers struggle to attend deliveries in the dark. WEEMA installed We Care Solar solar lights at 40 health centers throughout Kembata-Tembaro, Hadiya and Halaba. Light saves lives!
Recruiting and retaining physicians in rural hospitals can be very challenging. WEEMA supports general physicians and specialists, including the only OB/GYN in the Kembata-Tembaro Zone.
MEDICAL EQUIPMENT and supplies
WEEMA has delivered life-saving medical equipment and supplies to 5 health centers in the region. In 2018, WEEMA partnered with IMEC to ship medical equipment from the US to 3 primary hospitals and 1 general hospital in Kembata Tembaro Zone.
Essential newborn care
WEEMA trained 36 local healthcare workers in the Essentials of Newborn Care.
