MATERNAL, NEWBORN and CHILD HEALTH

WEEMA has two main goals within maternal, newborn and child health.  First, our goal is to reduce preventable deaths - access to trained health professionals and supplies saves lives!  Second, we want to pilot maternal child health models and interventions that can be taken to scale in Ethiopia.

Hamlin Midwives

WEEMA sponsors 5 women at the Hamilin College of Midwives.  Four will graduate in 2016 and return to Tembaro to serve as "master" midwives providing high quality-maternity care, mentorship to nurses and midwives, and community education on mother and child health.

Mobile Health

WEEMA is piloting a new, innovative program with D-tree International and the IZUMI Foundation. Together we will empower community health workers with the computing power of the smartphone.  This program aims to reduce under-5 child morality.

SOLAR SUITCASE

Many health centers are without electricity, and healthcare providers struggle to attend deliveries in the dark. WEEMA installed We Care Solar solar lights at 39 health centers throughout Kembata-Tembaro, Hadiya and Halaba.  Light saves lives!

PHYSICIAN SUPPORT

Recruiting and retaining physicians in rural hospitals can be very challenging.  WEEMA supports 3 general physicians as well as the only OB/GYN in the Kembata-Tembaro Zone.

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT and supplies

WEEMA delivered life-saving medical equipment and supplies to 4 health centers in the region.

Essential newborn care

WEEMA trained 36 local healthcare workers in the Essentials of Newborn Care.
